The Giving Bunny Project – One Year On

It has officially been one year since we launched the Giving Bunny Project, and hundreds of comments and thousands of bunnies later, the project is still going strong, bringing countless little bundles of bunny joy to strangers all around the world. We had no idea when we launched this project just how big it would grow to be, and how strong it’s still going today!

What is the Giving Bunny Project? Well, it’s a worldwide collaborative group project designed to spread a little bit of handmade joy to total strangers. All you do is grab your free and totally adorable little bunny design, make a bunch, and leave them out with their little tags for strangers to find. You can read all about the whole project here.

Not long after it’s launch last year, the bunnies started spreading like… well, bunnies! Within a few months, the bunnies had literally taken over the world. That’s right, you guys got a bunny on every continent, including Antarctica!

Since then the bunny army has only continued to grow, popping up in countless countries and new places. They’ve made their appearances in care packages to soldiers, showed up in force to children’s hospitals, and hidden in corners in libraries, museums and schools.

You’ve made them by the dozens, even by the hundreds! You can see lots of examples by checking out all the Giving Bunny pics uploaded to our flickr group!

Their global march continues on! This is the map of all the bunnies one year later. You can click here to see the full interactive google map of ALL the bunnies around the world, and add your own bunny to the map.

The Bunny Project even appeared in print! A special edition of Made In Felt Magazine ran an article all about the bunnies and their adventures around the globe.

So, one year later and those little bunnies continue to bring joy to thousands by the hands of crafty and generous folks such as you. The holiday season is a perfect time to get into the giving spirit. Do you want to take part? The Giving Bunny project is always open, and the bunny will always remain a free design. Visit the original post to find out how to get started with your own bunny army. Many the bunnies reign for many more years to come!

A Special Tag For Giving Bunnies On A New Mission

When we launched the Giving Bunny project two weeks ago, we just hoped it would be a chance to spread a little random joy to strangers. With the tragedy that unfolded in Connecticut last Friday, many of you have asked about sending the Giving Bunnies on a special mission to try and bring a small measure of comfort to those affected.

We can think of no better cause for these little bunnies, but as a show of respect to the families, we have created a special tag that removes mention of the Urban Threads url and just lets the bunnies be given as nothing but gifts. The special pdf tag (which you can download here) includes two versions. One is similar to our original, but omits the url and gives a little extra love. The second is if you wish to create your bunny in honor of one of the victims, and write their name in instead.

However you want to use these tags and bunnies to spread joy is up to you. You may wish to just create a bunny in honor of a victim and leave them in remembrance. If you wish however to send any bunnies to Connecticut, it seems the best place to send it would be to the Newtown Post Office, which has created a postal box for people to send care packages, condolences and letters (thank you Daphne for tracking that down!)

The address you can send your bunnies is below:

Messages of Condolence for Newtown
P.O. Box 3700
Newtown, Connecticut 06470

The Bunnies Go Marching On…

Since their release less than two weeks ago, it has been nothing short of amazing watching The Giving Bunny army spread from one bunny on my studio table to a whole army spreading bunny joy across the world! With another weekend of possible bunny schemes to come, I thought I’d share some of the adventures these little guys have already been up to.

Folks jumped in with both feet to make a small army of regular bunnies…

But it didn’t take long before they started taking on wild personalities of their own…

Diana's Bunnies
They formed their own little groups, even forming their own little bands and groupies…

The Blues Brothers Bunnies & Friends

Some seemed strangely familiar, but I couldn’t figure out exactly “Who” they were. Hmm.

Guess Who?

They ventured out for movies and social events…

took on their own personalities and personas…

Diana's Bunnies

and even expressed their own nerdy quirks and interests.

They are also made by all kinds of people, in all different ways, all over the world. They’ve been made (and found!) by adults and kids…

Lydia's Giving Bunnies

Made by hand…

by experienced stitches and those who had never tried embroidery before…

And by machine, sometimes into mini bunny armies themselves!

And when the bunnies were done and dressed up, they ventured out into the world, waiting for their new owners and prepared for an adventure (and possible bad weather).

They’ve invaded schools, libraries, coffee shops, movie theaters, nursing homes and even hospitals…

With the growing bunny army venturing out into the world, bunnies are finding new homes and maybe even inspiring the creation of more bunnies! After all, it is the season of giving, and the bunnies are all for the holiday spirit.

With each bunny found, one more person might join in to spread the bunny joy, and thus the bunny army grows.

What’s more, with your help, the bunny tag has expanded from English to include four five new languages, GermanItalianFrenchSpanish and now Dutch

and spread to 5 continents around the world, with schemes even to Antarctica!

click the map to visit and add a bunny!

All within two short little weeks.

Who knew bunnies were so good at multiplying?

With your help, and a giving spirit, who knows for far these bunnies can go, and how many people we can bring a little joy to. If you want to take part, check out all the details on the Giving Bunny Project here, and grab your FREE bunny design for machine stitchers here, and hand stitchers here. You can browse through all the photos of the giving bunnies we’ve gotten so far with the gallery above and even add your own.

Happy holidays everyone, and thank you for being in the giving spirit! It has been nothing short of inspiring to watch the world embrace these bunnies. I hope your adventures go well this weekend 🙂
