Alicia Hornsby_finalist

This costume is from Alicia, and if you can believe it, it’s her first full completed outfit! She used “faux” button hole designs to complete her coat, and two classy piratey designs on the back to finish it off.

Heather Luca_finalist

Steampunk designer Heather Luca of Scoundrelle’s Keep pulled together this amazing Steampunk Carousel outfit, featuring the Steampunk Carousel collection and finished off with a cool lock piece on the front panel of her corset!

Jeanelle took lots of photos of this gorgeous Scottish gown she custom made. She used a lot of designs from the Gilded Heraldry pack all around the bottom of the gown.

Jessica Lange_finalist

This self-designed steampunk lolita captain costume is from Jessica in Germany. She added lots of nautical designs around the skirt, and is even rocking an embroidered steampunk lace choker. And that hair!

Mariah Wagner_finalist

Mariah is back again, and she decided unleash her inner mermaid this year! She made everything, from the mermaid leggings down to the embroidered spats. She used a lot of designs from the Sea Treasure collection, plus one Little Mermaid design on the back of her bolero. She even made the trident!

Marina Minkler_finalist

This Diva Aquanaut from stitcher Marina was completely inspired by the Urban Threads collection Ocean Blue. She absolutely loved the diver design and that became the center motif for the whole look.  She even sculpted the diver helmet herself out of paper mache! The dress itself consists of many parts, including removable sleeves, a corsage, skirt and bolero. They all feature embroidery designs from Ocean Blue and the Nauticus collection, with a few extra designs from here and there.

Miriam made this little raven princess costume for her little one. It not only includes lots of designs from the Clockwork Natura collection, and she added a gorgeous finishing touch with a freestanding lace raven mask!

Sabrina Douthit_finalist

Sabrina made this amazing bat dress for her daughter’s Halloween wedding. What a stunning use of a single design!

Sophie Michaelsen_finalist

Stitcher Sophie is rocking Steampunk Sailor Moon! What a great combination of a classic anime look with a steampunk update. She’s even added embroidered gears to her fingerless gloves.

Wendy de Glee_finalist

Wendy used tons of designs from the Gothic Gala and Briar Rose collection for her stunning Gothic Cathedral Gown. So chic!

Urban Threads Costume Contest 2016

*UPDATE! – The contest deadline has been extended to Wednesday Nov 2nd!*

The embroidery machines are a-whirrin’, and a chill is in the air. October is here, and it’s time for one of our most popular contests of the year…

It’s the Urban Threads annual Costume Contest!

This year the contest opens today, Thursday, Oct. 6, and ends Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2016. That means you have a bit of time to post your costumes after partying away on Halloween night! Your costume can be from any time (meaning it doesn’t have to be a Halloween costume), but cannot already have been entered in a previous Urban Threads contest.

How do you enter? Just take a photo of your awesome costume that features at least one Urban Threads embroidery design (hand or machine). Costumes may be for people or pets! You can add it to instagram or the Urban Embroidery flickr group with the tag utcostume2016. In addition, in order to make your entry official you MUST send an email to, with a link to where you photo is online, or attach it to your email and we’ll upload it for you. Looking to get inspired? Check out the amazing entries from last year.

We’ll choose our 10 favorites as finalists, and post those 10 to be voted on BY YOU the week after Halloween. UT stitchers will vote to see which lucky costumer wins…

A $50 Urban Threads gift certificate!

Good luck and happy stitching, everyone!

Craft Is Art – Coloring Contest!

contest header

Spring is here, and color is on the way… we figured it was time for another awesome crafty contest! You know the big coloring trend that’s popped up all over the place lately? If you’ve never tried it, it’s a fun and zen way to get into a creative space. Well, we’ve got a super crafty way for you to give it a try, AND WIN yourself an amazing package of thread colors!

To kick off this contest, we’re introducing a fun new FREEBIE you can use to get creative on coloring. First let’s take a peek at this new design you can grab to get your entry started…

We’ve got a great new design done in simple black outlines, in a whimsical style perfect for coloring. You can download your freebie right here in four beautiful sizes, for both machine and hand embroidery.

Download your machine embroidery freebie, hoop it up with some stabilizer, and stitch away! If you’re doing it by hand, we recommend still stitching the outline in black so you can have fun adding color later.

Stitching your design on a white fabric is best, as that’s the easiest to color on. We recommend cotton or other natural fibers that will soak in fabric markers or fabric paint best.

Also, you may want to leave yourself some room on your fabric in case you wish to turn your colored design into a wall hanging, pillow, hoop art, or whatever else you might desire! That’s not technically part of the contest, but it’s a fun way to show off your hard work.

There are all kinds of ways you can color your design. Obviously, the easiest is fabric markers, which you can find at pretty much any fabric or craft store. However, you don’t have to stop there. There are all kinds of other fun paint techniques you can mix into your design, like loose painting with fabric paints, or just paint splats. Any media you want to use for coloring are fair game!

You can mix it up and get really creative with your medium, but the goal here is to color this design with as much personality as you can muster! When you’re done feel free to turn it into something fun! It can be on a bag, or pillow or anything, as long as we can still see your amazing coloring creation. You may send as many entries as you like.

So, once you’ve stitched and colored your magical creation, you’ll need to take a nice clear picture of it, and email it into before Saturday, April 30 at 11:59 p.m., Central time.
