Tell
us a bit about your background -- what led you into art?
Art and music have always been equal passions for me. I cannot remember
a time when I wasn’t sketching and drawing something. I grew up in
England and have moved around many times up to this point in my life;
art has been something that has tied many different places together for
me in a creative kind of way.
Tell us a bit about your design and the story behind it.
I drew this sweet cat taking a photo as part of a daily drawing
challenge I created for myself in the summer of 2011. The basis for the
challenge was to draw an animal every day -- the "daily animal doodles."
I would create lists of obscure animals and familiar ones with the goal
to draw one each day; the cat day turned out as one of my favorite
illustrations!
What
inspires your designs?
Definitely nature and animal themes are found throughout all of my art.
I also aim to create many pieces which include musical instruments or
have some tie to the world of music. Vintage children’s book
illustrations are also visually inspiring.
What’s your studio/workspace like?
My workspace goes through many variations during the year. I am often
rearranging the set-up of my materials, desk space, and layout of the
rooms in my apartment. In other words, I guess I like change.
What’s
your favorite handmade craft you’ve ever made?
I was recently devoted to doing DIYs and creating new project ideas.
Hand-carving lino stamps was so much fun! Using the stamps to create
textile patterns was an awesome way to spruce up a boring thrifted piece
or make something new and original.
Finally, if you were a Crayola color, what color would you be?
Wow! So many to choose from! I think I would be "Asparagus."
