It’s Not About Age It’s About Attitude – Freebie & Contest

So, there’s a deep, dark secret that we’d like to let you all in on…

We get a lot of email from folks confessing something to us. They tell us, in hushed tones or conspiratorial emails, that actually, they’re NOT twenty- or even thirty-somethings that everyone would have expected of UT customers. They are in fact unassuming mothers or grandparents or great-grandparents who, for one reason or another, actually really like skulls, or Sinbonnet Sue, or are just secretly sick of teddy bears.

They tell us this in emails, in quiet. I think it’s because they imagine that they must be the only ones their age who thinks this. But you know what we’ve discovered in four years of doing alternative designs?

Age ain’t nothing but a number. It’s all about the attitude.

Forget all your assumptions about what “kind” of person these designs are for, because you know what? We may be the pirates of the embroidery world but we’ve discovered a whole lot of swash and buckle on the high seas, and it’s all kinds who make great pirates.

You are all ages, all types, all backgrounds, and we’re here to prove it. Or rather, you’re here to prove it, and show just how awesome and varied you as customers can be. Feeling like the only grandma who likes embroidering steampunk? Think you’re the only embroidery guy out there? Wonder if sometimes you’re the only punk kid working an embroidery machine? Not so. You have found your people here, I promise, and we’ll show it AND give you a chance to win a $25 gift certificate just for sharing how awesome you are.

First, download this awesome new freebie. It’s yours whether you want to enter the contest or not!

If you want to take part in the contest, show the world that alternative stitching is for everyone, AND get a chance to win a $25 Urban Threads gift certificate, just stitch this freebie on anything of your choice, and take a photo of you rocking your new stitches, with a rock hand or a thumbs up!

Niamh - Age 27, Collector of Fanged Bunnies & Embroidery Evil Genius

You can show your pretty face, or crop it out if you’re shy, just make sure we can see the design and your hand. Then, please share with us your first name and your age, and any other fun details you want to share that make you unique!

You can upload this photo to our flickr group and tag it “ut_attitude”, or email it in to us at and we’ll upload it for you!

Four lucky stitchers who enter will be chosen randomly to receive a $25 gift certificate. This contest is open for three weeks, so you have from now until June 19th at 11:59pm to get your photo in to enter.

Let’s show the world that skull lovers, steampunk stitchers, and alternative crafters come from all kinds, and prove that stitching is more about attitude than it is about age.

Grab your freebie and get stitching!

Sharing is fun!

Attitude . . . is created by our universal soul as women, young, old, fat, skinny, sane, insane and when women get together to “sew or create” watch out world. We are here! At least I’m here and loving it and love being 60, white hair, truly one of the original hippies children – I’m so beautiful!

I heard someone say once that if you are old at 50 then you were old at 20. I know people like that: old souls. I am hoping it is not me that is old before my time. In any case, I’d love it if you picked me.

  22. 22
    Chris says:

This is so cool! THANK YOU!!! I love your “stuff” and how they sew out. I will be 62 in July, and my face has wrinkles, but, my mind does not. I’ll be groovin’ to the Beatles, REO, and Fleetwood Mac when I’m 80. Peace and Love!!!

  23. 23
    Marie says:

Hi, I have always been the rebel in the family. In school (1988) I wrote the word NOTORIOUS in grafiti style on my book case. lol. I am despite being 41 and mother of 4 sons still the object of much gossip because I say what is on my mind. So why go and sit in a conservative heap and die because your trying to fit in? The popular road traveled by most is the highway to hell anyway.
So keep up the good work and though flowers and cutie animals are nice we all need a little bit of difference every day.

hey by 40 I learned to type on a keyboard. By fifty I learned to take apart and repair computers and what the internet was all about. By fifty five I got my embroidery machine and found out how to make awesome designs. By fifty eight I found Urban Threads and fell in love again with the wonder of the internet, I may never know all about the internet but I am sure glad that Urban Threads has plenty to keep me coming back..

    Kim says:

Well, I must say that I as well fell in love with UT designs. I just recently got back in to machine embroidery when I saw how it was so computerized now (had a much older machine with limited embroidery). These designs ROCK!! I am so inspired now that I found UT.

Yes, I too am 52 and a grandma with much attitude. My little grand daughter came in my sewing room the other night, and I was listening to God&Guns, yes you know that group- my absolute fave…..Skynyrd. She said Mimi are you done with your bag you’re machine colors on because Barbie would say you need to rock this party – seriously cracked me up. I told her she had watched way too many Barbie movies. She loves my bag I’ve done with UT designs. Posting this week hopefully, but it may be this weekend!! Keep up the good work, young ladies. We do love your stuff……

When I showed your designs to another lady that was a little more that half my age, she just looked at me and said you really have a dark side, don’t you. My reply………wouldn’t have it any other way…LOL

    • Elfie B. says:

Barbie movies are a secret weakness of mine. Don’t tell my now 14-yo daughter I’ve kept “Rapunzel”. I just love the art in that one, and Angelica Huston as the voice of Gothel makes me love it even more. And ssssh for the “Fairytopia” set! That Barry White impression in the mermaid segment puddles me whenever I hear it.

  31. 31
    Julia says:

I LOVE Urban Threads! Since discovering the site I’ve purchased numerous designs. I’m 52 years young and love sewing/embroidering as well as playing my electric bass and cello.
Thanks UT for the fun, artistic, cute designs. Keep up the good work!
    Sew on!

My 59th birthday was celebrated at a Metallica concert and two months later Iron Maiden was on my menu. I like to think that at 60 I’m having far too much fun to be ‘old’. UT designs are sprinkling my grandchild-under-construction’s onesies and blankets because who wants a dull grandchild?

    Christine says:

Do you get brownie points for attempting this design in cross-stitch?? I’m the one who still wears a skull and crossbone earring in only 1 ear, listen to alternative music and look for non-teddy bear anything. My 21 yr old daughter thinks I’m a complete dweeb. What she doesn’t know is I’m happy in my dweebyness! I’m 48 yrs old with 5 kids ranging in age from 27 to 6, and a grandma of 1 and 1-on-the-way. Rock on babes!!

I am 56 years young and not ashamed to say I love this site. I have put several of the tribal designs on my husbands t-shirts. He too loves them. I don’t expect to win although it would be lovely. I already know what I would purchase if I were lucky enough. lol Thanks again to everyone responsible for the Urban Threads website. Ruth

It’s so fun reading all of these comments. At 47, I’m feeling kind of like a youngster compared to some of you~ haha! I think it’s great that I’m not the only one not “acting my age”! 🙂

I’m 21 plus tax and interest (74) and I looove these designs. I do my share of butterflys and flowers too. The designs from UT speak to the other side of me. I really love this new freebe with attitude. I know it will go on something.(for me)

I really enjoy the designs offered on the Urban Threads site, they are refreshing.I especially like the creative tutorials. I am a proud Grandma who likes whimsy and the unexpected. I put your ATTITUDE design on a bathing suit cover-up but intend to make some radical dish towels for a couple of other Grandma friends who will appreciate having something other than fruit and vegetables displayed in their kitchens. Have posted the pic to Flickr. Also, thank you for the DONT PANIC towel design. My son took his towel to work on towel day and he plans to pass it on and keep the cycle going. Thanks!

    Silver says:

Hey Now!!! I was one of the very first customers to come your site by way of an invite from your ‘former’ embroidery design site boss (Deb)… Hey they are still ‘cool’ IMO. I bought SO many of your designs from there as well as their ‘cute ones’ to make for gifts for my younger in years family and friends. But they sure had me pegged right when they sent me to UT!
So OK… skullies, Ravens, Tarot, Celt/Danu/Pict, trees, ‘spiritual’ laadies and other awesome stuff are favs too (*sigh* not dead bird skulls tho… made my ‘black’ birds cry when they saw ’em!)
Best of all: Steam Punk!!! (Did you know Steam Punk IS accredited to Jules Verne! And you think I am old lol.
Oh and I was so very happy and yet sad to get my very own ‘Don’t Panic’ -Hitchhiker’s Guide Guru Douglas Adams (blessed be his soul wherever/whenever it may now exist in the Quantum Universe) towel so I am always prepared to signal with thumbs up for a ‘cosmic’ ride if the situation presents itself.
At 51, after 7 spine surgeries equipping me with more Titanium, Stainless rods, screws and fusions as well as multiple nerve stimulating electronics I make the Bionic Woman look like a Barbie doll!
I still machine embroider on my ‘Beastie’ (6 needle Baby Lock, hike, back-road bike, do a bit of off-road 4 wheelin'(hubby said I was ‘bad’ for not acting my age and sold my AWD SXV *sniff* *sniff*; I still run fast 11s in my stock Shelby (a REAL one)-(legally of course 😉 ) and my favorite- climb rock face walls!!!!!… real rock walls, not fake stuff, and of course with no ropes (darn ropes could break ya know! lol).
My three teens favorite Mantra is ‘Hey Mom! Wait for us!!!’
    Love ya Niahm and Crew!!!!!!!!!!!
    From one ole Irish gal…

This is a great new design. I am always showing your designs to everyone from 10 to 100. My 97 year old friend here at the assisted living joint loves them and she is still making the funniest collages and 3-D creations herself. I am downloading this in digital art for her. I’m 64 myself and my whole family just loves all the things I make them using your designs. My son-in-law loves his BBQ apron with the King of the Grill on it. Grandson’s love the pirates, etc. Well, just all your designs are most beloved. I still love the “Rockin’ Grandma”. I better get started on this project so I can win the contest. Thanks from one of your older fans.

whenever i hear someone say that they are getting too old for something, i tell them to speak for themselves and tell them age is just a number. Maybe that’s why everyone is shocked when I tell them i am only 52. i’m so glad to hear that others have the right attitude.

  61. 61
    jan says:

thanks so much for the great freebie!!! it definitely tells the truth…..age is totally just a # these days….

When I was a little girl I remember taking my grandmothers cane and practicing with it so I would know how to be old lady. It seemed like a wonderful thing to be!

Well here I am, a great-grand-mother ( I will be 69 in July) and although it is getting harder to get of the back of the motorcycle and still look cool;-) I don’t use a cane and was right, being an old lady can be a wonderful thing!!!

From Lace to Motorcycles, I have many interests to fill my life, from the latest music to Classic Rock, I always have something to sing, from young to old, I can always find a friend. Life is good and I guess that is what I call Attitude!

Recently retiring from Pre-Press and Advertising I now have the time to do what I love and live life to the fullest. From the first time I found Urban Threads I fell in love with the designs. I recently started my Etsy shop “The House of Frogbird” ( ) making and selling LED candle wraps, and Urban Threads became one of the places I go to for great designs.

I have used several Urban Threads designs, including Brigid’s Cross, Tree of Life and Love Potion # 9, and have plans to use many more. I have other larger projects to stitch so I will have to live a long time to stitch all the designs I want to stitch. When I saw this “It’s about Attitude” design I had to turn it into a candle wrap. I Love it!!! Thank you Urban Threads for being part of this wonderful time in my life:-)

I thought I was the only one! I have always refused to act my age and I don’t want to embroider cutsie pootsie designs. Love steampunk, skulls and pretty much everything I have seen on this sight. I have been making my own clothes since I was 12 (which was a few years ago) and only wish I had machine embroidery and this website back in the day. Eventho I am now a grammy I love it. Keep on keepin on
